External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar is set to embark on an official visit to the United Kingdom and Ireland today. His trip follows a high-level emergency meeting convened by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, where European leaders gathered to discuss support for Ukraine and its President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The meeting took place amid growing tensions between Zelenskyy and key U.S. figures, including former President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, following their interactions at the White House.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Dr. Jaishankar will undertake this two-nation tour from March 4 to 9.
"India and the UK share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that has deepened in various sectors, including Defence & Security, Trade & Economy, Health, Education, and People-to-People ties. During the visit, EAM will engage in discussions with his counterpart, Foreign Secretary David Lammy, and meet several dignitaries, as well as members of the Indian community," the MEA stated.
The ministry further highlighted India’s strong bilateral relations with Ireland, rooted in democratic values, cultural connections, and expanding economic cooperation. "EAM will meet his Irish counterpart, Simon Harris, along with other dignitaries and members of the Indian community during his visit to Ireland on March 6-7, 2025. This visit is expected to enhance India’s friendly relations with both the UK and Ireland," it added.
While bilateral discussions will cover various topics, key talks in the UK will center around the Ukraine-Russia conflict. During his recent meeting with Zelenskyy, Starmer announced plans for a “coalition of the willing,” involving Britain, Ukraine, France, and other nations, to draft a peace proposal aimed at securing Trump’s endorsement.
Jaishankar's visit takes place as India continues to uphold a neutral stance in global geopolitics, avoiding alignment with Europe, Ukraine, Russia, or the US. Last week, India abstained from voting on two UN resolutions—one led by Ukraine and the other by the United States—reinforcing its commitment to strategic autonomy while maintaining diplomatic balance.
As the Russia-Ukraine conflict persists, New Delhi remains steadfast in its impartial approach, refraining from taking explicit sides. Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen underscored the significance of achieving a “just and lasting peace” based on international law, the UN Charter, and the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
